{LANG_NAVORIGIN} Wireless Security War Driving

Wireless Attacks and Penetration Testing (part 2 of 3)
There are several techniques to performing penetration testing on your wireless network, the objective of all of them being to improve the security and integrity of the network itself. What wireless lacks in the security of the physical layer and medium must be compensated for in protections on other layers of the stack.

Wireless Attacks and Penetration Testing (part 1 of 3)
The very idea of a wireless network introduces multiple venues for attack and penetration that are either much more difficult or completely impossible to execute with a standard, wired network. Wireless networks only know the boundaries of their own signal: streets, parks, nearby buildings, and cars all offer a virtual "port" into your wireless network.

Wireless Scanning – Wardriving / Warchalking
Wireless scanning is a method to find an available wireless network access point. It allows you to identify wireless networks through the use of WNIC (wireless network interface card) running in promiscuous mode and a software that will probe for access points. Once an open wireless access point is found, the wardriver usually maps it, so at the end he would have a map of access points with their properties (SSID, WEP, MAC etc.). Whenever the attacker wants to return into the network, he/she usually logs packets for later analysis, or to run them though a WEP key cracker when a weak key is being used.

Wireless Security & Hacking
Few words on Wireless network topology. Each Wireless network has two major components, either stations (STA) or access points (AP). Wireless network operates in one of two modes: ad-hoc (peer-to-peer) or infrastructure mode. In the ad-hoc mode each client (STA) communicates directly with other clients within the network. In the infrastructure mode each client (STA) sends its communication requests to a central station, which is the Access Point (AP). The access point acts as an Ethernet bridge.

Ethics of War Driving
In order to start to understand what War-Driving is, some information needs to be explained. Wireless networking is a fairly new technology which is being used all over the world. Both home users and business alike are using wireless technology. Using wireless technology lets computer users connect to the Internet and to their network without being restricted by cables.
