Do I Need to Be Concerned About These Firewall Log Entries? With the coming HIPAA regulations, the cost of failing to maintain confidentiality will also increase. In this paper, I'll highlight certain entries from the firewall log file and attempt to determine the level of concern that should be associated with them.

Proxies and Packet Filters in Plain English The term firewall in computer jargon has the same connotation as it would in relation to your house or car. It provides protection against anything that has the ability to destroy your property. In relation to your car and house it protects against fires and in networking it provides protection against attacks on your network or computer. Network firewalls can serve several purposes. They act as a gateway providing access for your network to multiple networks or to the Internet. They can also block traffic flowing to and from the network. They have the ability to choose what is and what is not allowed to flow in and out of the network. The firewall's ability to decide what is and what is not allowed are configurations that are setup by the system administrator as policies or rules. These policies define what traffic the firewall will or will not allow to enter the network. They also define what is allowed to or not allowed to leave the network.

Choosing The Best Firewall Due to the phenomenal growth of the Internet in the last couple of year's companies find it hard to operate without a presence on the Internet. This means that companies are exposed to threats, which can have major business impact, even if a company is just running a web-page containing advertisement data. Defacing this sit e will result in image loss with one's clients, which can translate into financial losses to name on example. The fact that one needs to protect your company from unauthorized or unwanted access is considered a common fact. In order to do this the SANS GIAC training teaches the concept of "Defense of Depth". The most common defense device on most networks is a Firewall. It can be a daunting task to pick the right firewall for any organization and this assignment focuses on exactly that issue. In order to pick the right Firewall understanding what a firewall does is crucial.

Getting the Most out of your Firewall Logs A good security solution has many layers or components, commonly referred to as "Defense in Depth". Regardless of which types of security solutions are being implemented, logging is critical to ensure their implementation is running smoothly as well to keep tabs on what is happening in an environment. While it is easy to suggest that all logs should be looked on a weekly, if not daily basis, the amount of information commonly logged is so great and often times in a format that is difficult to understand, it becomes a tedious job that more times than not gets overlooked. As a result logs are either not reviewed at all or given a cursory review, which results in the most critical items being missed altogether.

Firewalls For Beginners Access to e-mail and other Internet resources is very much a necessity for conducting business and accessing information. However, along with the convenience that network connectivity brings, it also raises serious security concerns. With always-on connections such as cable modems and DSL lines, Internet users need to be increasingly vigilant of security issues, as network traffic coming into the computer can cause damage to files and programs even when the user is away from the computer and the computer is idle. In a system that is not protected with any security measures, malicious code such as viruses can infect systems and cause damage that may be difficult to repair. Unscrupulous characters on the Internet are always snooping around trying to find open computers from which they can steal personal files, personal information or create other forms of mischief. The loss of financial records, e-mail, customer files, can be devastating to a business or to an individual.
