How Windows Server 2003’s Software Restriction Policies Improve Security Allowing any unauthorized software to run on company computers, especially those connected to the network, poses many dangers. Even if the program isn’t infested with malicious code, incompatibility problems can result in operating system crashes, or interfere with the operation of other programs, and complicate tech support and troubleshooting – not to mention licensing issues. For this reason, Microsoft includes a new feature with Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP: software restriction policies.

Policy and the Windows Server 2003 Group Policy Management Console Group policy was first introduced with the release of Windows 2000 Server and Active Directory in the year 2000. With the introduction of Windows Server 2003, Microsoft has also released the Group Policy Management Console. The purpose of this paper is to highlight how this tool changes and, in most cases, improves upon the way that Group Policy is managed since the introduction of Windows 2000 and why it is important to security administrators and administrators in general. Additionally, examples will be provided to demonstrate how using this tool will enable to better control security and other related policies.

Hardening Domain Controllers The domain controller server role is one of the most important roles to secure in any environment with computers running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 that use Microsoft Active Directory directory service. Any loss or compromise of a domain controller in the environment could prove devastating to clients, servers, and applications that rely on domain controllers for authentication, Group Policy, and a central lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP) directory.
